Phoebe

2004 - 2025

Phoebeatrice Catherine Ophelia Cleopatra Shawshank Frentress joined our family on her “gotcha day,” November 7, 2006. At the time, she was estimated to be about 1 ½ to 2 years old. We know little about her first two years, except that she was a stray for some time and had at least one litter of kittens—likely more. She was adopted from the Animal Rescue League of Iowa after winning our hearts with her sweet and loving nature.
Phoebe was more than just a cat; she often acted like a dog. She’d watch us leave through the front window and greet us at the door when we returned. She adored the girls and had an uncanny ability to anticipate their arrival home from school, coming downstairs just before they walked through the door, as if she could tell time.
Her favorite activities included basking in the sun, playing with non-toy objects like Polly Pocket clothes and hair ties, and nibbling on my plants—only to throw them up later. And she always knew exactly when I was in a zoom meeting and demanded attention at that time.
Though small—she never weighed more than seven pounds—Phoebe had a spicy side. She held her ground with strangers and other pets, earning a reputation in the neighborhood that made some kids (and adults)wary of her. But for those who took the time to know her, her bravado was just an act. Beneath it all, she was fiercely loyal and loving, rewarding patience with her undying affection.
We are deeply grateful for the 18 wonderful years she spent with us, most of them in good health. However, age caught up with her this past year, and her health declined rapidly in recent months.
Phoebe’s presence filled our home with love and memories that will stay with us forever. She will be deeply missed.
